Indian Tourists can apply for e-Visa for Russia starting 01 January 2021
On July 31, 2020, Russian President Mr. Vladmir Putin signed a law on the introduction of a single entry electronic visa for visiting Russia starting from January 1, 2021.
Experts in the tourism sector believe that such a step may eventually significantly strengthen Russia’s position as a tourist power in the competitive field with other countries. The system for issuing paper entry visas to Russia is outdated and has become a barrier to tourists in the age of digitalization.
Now, a universal single-entry electronic visa will radically simplify the process of obtaining a permit, allowing a foreign citizen to stay in Russia for up to 16 days in a period of up to 60 calendar days. In addition, guests of the country will not be linked to a specific region, but will be able to move around the country to any region of his choice.
With international borders being closed due to coronavirus, led to significant losses for the Russian tourism industry. . The e-tourist visa, which will start in Russia next year, is designed to help make up for losses and overcome the industry crisis. Citizens of 53 countries, including India, will be able to take advantage of the offer.
In order to apply for an electronic visa, a tourist will only need to fill out an online application, which will be reviewed by the foreign Ministry within four days.
Sergey Korneev, Chairman of the Committee for tourism development of Saint Petersburg, commented: “Decisions are made dynamically in the world. Now, because of the pandemic, the process has accelerated even more. If earlier in Germany, tourists booked trips six months or a year in advance, now even Germans decide where and when to go more situationally and on the last minute. I think the post-viral tourist will be like this for a long time. Therefore, it becomes especially important to allow you to quickly and comfortably organize your trip. A single tourist visa will allow you to do this.”
Paresh Navani of Russian Information Center in India commented that “This will enable Indian tourists to book their tours to Russia just 5 days before intended date of departure making the process simple and quick, also normally the longer duration tours are between 10-14 days and this new system of 16 day visas will also be usefull in cases where the guest cannot return back as per schedule due to ilness or any other reasons with out having to worry about visa expiry matters. Further, the tourist can also extend their tours on the ground in Russia if any destination is added or interest on extra topics makes the toursit wish for extension, which was not possible in the current type of e-visa for Indians. Overall this digistisation of the visa process, duration of 16 days, access to all regions of Russia and the sharp reduction in processing time for all Russian regions is a boon for the travel trade and our guests wanting to visit Russia.”
