Malakhov Kurgan is a legendary place, that permanently perpetuated memory of the heroic feat of the Russian people. It was always an important strategic height for the city of Sevastopol, it was here that the fierce battles took place for the city defense during the Crimean War (1854-1855) and the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). Currently, Malakhov Kurgan is a large memorial complex in the town of Sevastopol.
The height of the mound is 97 meters above sea level. At the top there is a defensive tower, one of the rare fortifications of the mid-19th century, which has been preserved in the city of Sevastopol. It currently houses a branch of the Sevastopol Military Historical Museum-Reserve. The museum displays collections of weapons, military awards, military uniforms and various documentation of the Crimean War. By visiting the museum, you can learn about the history of the heroic defenders of the city and about the exploits they performed during the Great Patriotic War. The military munitions of 1941-1942 are also represented on the territory of the Kurgan.
After the end of World War II, a park was planted on the territory of the mound, which makes this place even more attractive for tourists. Some trees of the park were planted by Soviet rulers, representatives of foreign delegations and military pilots. On the territory of the park there is a mass grave made of white marble in memory of the fallen soldiers and memorial plates to batteries participating in the battles. Another historically significant place is a monument to Vice Admiral Vladimir Kornilov, who was fatally wounded in this place during the Crimean War.
In addition to historical significance, Malakhov Kurgan is the highest observation deck in Sevastopol, where many tourists come to enjoy the incredibly picturesque view.
