Shisselburg Fortress (Oreshek Fortress)

50 kilometers from St. Petersburg is an open-air Fort museum – the ancient Russian fortress Shisselburg Fortress (“Oreshek fortress”)

It was founded in 1323 at the mouth of the Neva river to protect lake Ladoga from Swedish attacks. The fortress is a natural island on which walls and towers are built. During its centuries-old history, the fortress was repeatedly besieged, for some time even belonged to Sweden, and became a prison in USSR days. There are old prison cells you can visit and understand the very difficult lives of the prisoners.

The fortress can be reached by road or by high speed hydrofoil boats. If the road route is taken, then you can also visit the WW II blockade/Siege Museum & further you can visit the spot where the German siege of St.Petersburg was broken, which houses an eternal flame and is known as the Broken Ring, all on the banks of Lake Ladoga.

The fort offers a beautiful panoramic view of the banks of the Neva river and lake Ladoga.
