The collection of Hermitage is divided into Six departments:

1.The Department of Western European Art. It is the largest and the most comprehensive department in the museum which includes every West European art schools like Italian, Dutch, Flemish, French, English, Spanish, German, and fantastic collection of French Impressionists and Post-impressionists.


2.The Department of the Art and Culture of Antiquity. This department has ancient Greek art, Roman art, and Roman copies of the Greeks


3. The Department of Prehistoric Culture. It contains the unique collection based on the excavations on the territory of Russia.


4. The Department of the Art and Culture of the Peoples of the East. It consists of two parts. One represents the collection of the former Soviet republics. The second one is devoted to the foreign oriental countries like ancient Egypt, China and Japan.


5. The Department of Russian Culture. It is a historic gallery to feature Russian arts and crafts that developed in the country from the early 18th till the early 20th centuries. The interiors of the Winter Palace are the part of the department.


6. The Numismatic Department. A new principle of arranging the exhibitions is introduced in the Hermitage – according to the countries and schools in strictly chronological order.
